Starter shawl.

citron mosaic

So I've joined 2,068 others in casting on Citron, from the winter Knitty. Now I'm not usually a shawl kind of person. I can appreciate the gorgeous lace, dainty nupps, and perfectly blocked points of the thousands of beautiful shawls fellow ravelers have knit, but they're just not something I've been keen to wear... until now, of course.

I actually made this one for a friend of mine, whose birthday it is today. It's pretty simple, but with a really lovely, ruffly, ruched result. I prefer to wear it "backwards", but she could probably wear it in the traditional way for a wedding or other more formal event. Now I'm hoping it will be the first (apart from my wedding shawl, here on ravelry) of many more to come.

The details:

Some lovely (and not too old fashioned) examples to check out (rav links):

Ulmus and Andrea's Shawl both by Kirsten Kapur
Mara by Madeline Tosh
Springtime Bandit by Kate Gagnon Osborn
and, as if you didn't already know, Ysolda Teague's sweet Ishbel and Damson patterns.

I love the shape and color! It reminds me of a pink grapefruit slice :)

More than 2000 projects on ravelry!! I may have to join the fun. I have some Rowan yarn left that I really want to use in grey... Would be the perfect project! Thanks for sharing!

I love this! It's been 2 weeks since I wanted to cast on for this, but I need to finish my other WIPs before casting on (silly rule of mine...)
Really pretty!

Ariane - thank you! Wow you're good, finishing your WIPs first! I can never do that (my ravelry projects page is evidence of this)! Can't wait to see yours once you get to it!

Gosh i love this. So pretty - what a perfect birthday gift, too - lucky friend. I hadn't really given the pattern a glance before now, somehow. I think i need to spend more time on Ravelry! I love all the other patterns you've posted too - I especially want a Mara and a Textured Shawl to cocoon myself in. I shall look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Thanks jane! I am now thinking about casting on an ishbel in a bright yellow malabrigo lace. I love the textured shawl recipe too - one for next winter!
